The curatorial theme of Memory Lane explores the rich and textured terrain of memory, the personal, the shared, the sacred, the nostaglic, the iconic and the political. It dissolves the lines between space, place and time, allowing for contemplation and reflection while providing fertile ground for the creation of millions of new memories in the process.

This individual project focuses on the rite, ritual and tradition of hanging shoes off wires in public spaces to honour personal memories and the lives of those who have had an impact on us.

This has been a very important ritual in the artist's life over the years. The installation takes this usually anonymous rite and transforms it into a very public affair. Installed outside the Bata Shoe Museum, the public is encouraged to be a part of the creative process by donating and hanging shoes that celebrate an important memory or person. Messages can be placed directly onto the soles of the shoes, which must have laces, so they can be hung.

Over the course of the evening, a collection of multiple memories to consider or add to are created as you pass beneath.

Is there is a set of shoes in your life that reminds you of a personal memory or a specific person or perhaps a special time in your life?

If so then I highly encourage you either donate them to my build by contacting me directly at cywilliamsdesign@gmail.com or to bring them down on site the night of and I will help you get them hung.
